Guide content

3M is the most-distributed brand in professional auto body and refinish work. Almost every working shop has 3M abrasives on the bench, 3M masking tape in the kit, and 3M Perfect-It on the polishing station. But 3M's catalog is also enormous — and most online retailers carry a confusing subset with stock cut to a few popular SKUs.

This is a working buyer's guide. We'll walk through the 3M product families that matter for auto body and refinish, which SKU to grab for which job, and what to skip. AutofxMart is an authorized 3M distributor and we ship the full Cubitron II, Perfect-It, masking, and body filler lines same-day from California, so we'll also flag where same-day West Coast sourcing matters.

TL;DR — which 3M product for which job

  • Sanding welds and edges, removing factory paint, heavy stock removal → 3M Cubitron II 987C fibre discs or 947A cloth belts
  • Roloc disc work, smaller-diameter edge sanding → 3M Cubitron II 987C or 947A Roloc discs
  • General DA sanding on body filler and primer → 3M Cubitron II Hookit or Stikit discs, 80–180 grit progression
  • Final pre-paint sanding (1000–1500 grit wet) → 3M Stikit or Hookit fine grits
  • Removing P1200+ sand scratches before polish → 3M Perfect-It Rubbing Compound 36060 (EX, modern clearcoats) or 39060 (standard)
  • Final swirl removal and gloss enhancement → 3M Perfect-It Machine Polish (06064) and Ultrafina (06068)
  • Edge masking on bare panels → 3M 233+ premium green tape
  • Stencil work and curve masking → 3M 218 fine-line stencil tape
  • Big panel masking (door jambs, full panels) → 3M Hand Masker films + 06900 masking paper
  • Body filler for general work → Evercoat or USC are the workhorses; 3M's Acryl Putty fills shallow defects after sanding
  • Stripable protective coatings (wheels, windows, trim) → 3M Tail Light Tint or specialty films per application

The 3M product families that matter

1. Cubitron II abrasives — the cut-and-life advantage

If you only learn one thing about 3M, learn Cubitron II. It's the family that justifies 3M's premium pricing.

Conventional abrasives are made of crushed mineral with random shapes. Cubitron II abrasives use precision-shaped grain — every grain is triangular, oriented to fracture predictably as it wears. The result: faster cut, much longer disc life, less heat generation, and reduced operator fatigue.

In practice this means: - 30–50% faster stock removal than conventional aluminum oxide abrasives - 2–3x longer disc life in heavy-pressure applications - Cooler workpiece during sanding (the precision grain self-fractures rather than dulling and generating heat)

The trade-off is price — Cubitron II costs 1.5–2x conventional 3M Stikit or competitive equivalents. For shop owners doing volume, the math works in Cubitron II's favor because consumable lifetime more than offsets per-disc cost. For occasional DIY work, conventional abrasives are still fine.

Key SKU families: - 987C — fibre disc, high pressure, weld grinding and edge prep. Comes in 4", 4.5", 5", 7" diameters. Available as Roloc, plain fibre, and quick-change. - 947A — cloth belt and Roloc disc, low to medium pressure, edge work and finishing. - Hookit / Stikit Cubitron II discs — DA sander discs in 5" and 6". 80, 120, 180, 240, 320, 400 grit progression. The workhorse for body work.

2. Perfect-It — compound, polish, ultrafina

3M's Perfect-It line is the most common compound/polish system in collision repair. Three main products in sequence:

Step 1 — Rubbing Compound (cuts out sand scratches) - 3M 36060 (Perfect-It EX Rubbing Compound) — best for modern hard clearcoats; quart size. The aggressive option for cutting through 1000–1200 grit sand scratches. - 3M 39060 (Perfect-It Rubbing Compound) — standard option, pint size, P1200+ grade and finer sand scratches.

If your shop sprays modern OEM clearcoats (most insurance work), EX 36060 is the right choice. For older softer clears or hobbyist work, 39060 is plenty.

Step 2 — Machine Polish (removes compound haze) - 3M 06064 (Perfect-It Machine Polish) — quart, removes haze and light swirls left by the rubbing compound step.

Step 3 — Ultrafina (final gloss, optional) - 3M 06068 (Perfect-It Ultrafina SE Polish) — quart, removes any remaining ultra-fine swirls. Optional for high-end show finish; many shops skip and go straight from 06064 to wax.

Combined with 3M's compounding pads (the rubbing compound needs a wool or compounding foam pad; the polish needs a foam polishing pad) you have a full three-stage system. Most shops keep all three on the bench.

3. Masking — tapes, films, papers

3M masks aren't cheap, but the failure cost of a paint bleed is materially higher than the cost premium. Especially on insurance work.

Tapes you'll actually use: - 233+ (premium green) — the general-purpose tape. Solvent-resistant, 14-day clean removal. The default for paint masking. - 218 stencil (fine-line orange) — for curved lines, two-tone breaks, custom paint. Releases cleanly from cured paint. - 2080 (delicate surface blue) — for masking on fresh paint or sensitive surfaces (vinyl, freshly cleared panels).

Films: - 3M Hand-Masker Plus Premium Masking Film — pre-folded plastic with tape edge. Pull tape, unfold film, mask the panel. The fast way to mask door jambs, fenders, full hoods.

Papers: - 06900 / 06901 (Auto Refinish Masking Paper) — solvent-resistant masking paper in 12" and 18" rolls. Use with a dispenser; pair with the 233+ tape.

4. 3M body fillers — supplement, don't replace

3M makes body fillers but Evercoat and USC dominate the body filler shelf in most shops. Where 3M wins: - 3M Acryl Putty 05096 — fine glazing putty for final defect fill after sanding the main filler. Smoother than polyester glazes, sands clean. - 3M Auto Body Filler 5887/5878 — competent alternative if you're already buying 3M consumables in volume; not the standard pro choice but works.

For general body filler, look to Evercoat Rage Gold or USC All-Metal first (we have a separate guide comparing those).

Where to source — and why same-day matters

3M product depth varies wildly across retailers. The Cubitron II family alone has hundreds of SKUs across grit, diameter, attachment type, and pad style. Most online retailers carry a few popular grits and call it done — leaving you to track down the rest from multiple sources.

AutofxMart is an authorized 3M distributor and carries ~1,200 3M SKUs across the auto body line. Same-day shipping from South San Francisco means West Coast shops typically have product in hand the next business day. For a shop running a job that needs a specific 220-grit Cubitron II Roloc, ordering Tuesday afternoon for Wednesday morning delivery beats the "expedited" 3-day-from-East-Coast alternative.

Other major 3M sources: - Norton Auto Distributors network — wholesale-oriented, requires trade account - Eagle National Supply — focused on factory-pack paint plus a 3M selection - O'Reilly / NAPA — retail counter availability, limited grit/SKU depth - 3M direct (3M.com) — listed but typically routes you to a distributor

What to skip

A few 3M product lines that get marketed hard but generally aren't worth the premium for most shops:

  1. 3M Wetordry sandpaper (older series) — superseded by Cubitron II Hookit for most uses. The wet-or-dry P-grade paper still has its place for hand-wet sanding, but DA sanding has moved on.
  2. 3M Trizact discs (P3000, P5000) — niche product for cutting orange peel before polish. Most shops achieve the same result with a P1500 wet sand + Perfect-It EX progression. Trizact discs are expensive and not every shop needs them.
  3. 3M Perfect-It Gelcoat Compound — marine-specific. If you're working auto body, the regular 36060 is the right pick.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 3M Cubitron II and standard 3M Stikit abrasives?

Cubitron II uses precision-shaped triangular ceramic grain that fractures predictably as it wears, delivering faster cut and longer life than the random-shape aluminum oxide grain in standard Stikit discs. Cubitron II costs 1.5–2x as much per disc but lasts 2–3x longer in heavy-pressure use, generally favorable economics for shops doing volume.

Is 3M Perfect-It 36060 or 39060 better?

3M Perfect-It 36060 (EX Rubbing Compound) is more aggressive and better suited for modern hard clearcoats; comes in a quart size. 3M Perfect-It 39060 is the standard formulation, less aggressive, pint size. For insurance work on current-model vehicles, 36060 is the right pick. For older or softer clears, 39060 is fine and cheaper per-ounce.

Does AutofxMart carry the full 3M Cubitron II line?

AutofxMart is an authorized 3M distributor and stocks approximately 1,200 3M SKUs across abrasives, compounds, masking, body fillers, and PPE. Cubitron II coverage spans the 987C fibre disc family, 947A cloth belt and Roloc family, and the Hookit/Stikit Cubitron II DA disc grits from 80 through 400.

What 3M masking tape should I use for two-tone or custom paint work?

3M 218 stencil tape (orange, fine-line) is designed for curved lines and clean two-tone breaks. It releases cleanly from cured paint and conforms to curves better than the standard 233+ green tape. Use 218 for the artistic line and back it up with 233+ for the broader masking.

How fast does AutofxMart ship 3M products?

Orders placed before 3pm Pacific Time on a business day ship the same day from AutofxMart's South San Francisco warehouse. West Coast addresses typically receive shipments within 1–2 business days via ground; East Coast within 3–5 business days.

Can I get a 3M trade account through AutofxMart?

AutofxMart sells at distributor pricing without requiring trade accounts. Pro-shop bulk pricing is available on request for qualifying orders, typically above $500. There is no minimum order, no commercial-account paperwork, and no membership fee.

Is the 3M I buy online the same as what jobbers sell?

Yes, provided you buy from an authorized 3M distributor. AutofxMart is authorized direct from 3M and ships factory-fresh, sealed product with the manufacturer's standard warranty. Beware of unauthorized resellers on marketplaces — counterfeit Cubitron II discs have been reported on some platforms.

Bottom line

3M's pricing premium is justified when your shop's labor and reliability matter more than per-disc cost — which describes most working body shops. Cubitron II in your DA sander, Perfect-It on your polishing pad, and 233+ on your masking dispenser is the configuration most pros default to.

For DIY restorers or occasional users, 3M's conventional Stikit + non-EX Perfect-It products are still excellent and cost less per use. There's no shame in not running the premium line.

Either way: buy from an authorized distributor, check the dating on chemicals, and reorder before you run out. Body work moves fast when supplies don't slow you down.
