"It's just a small chip," the customer said #Shorts
It began, as these things do, with "just a small chip." We would simply feather it out. Eight exhibits later we had reached the Earth's mantle.
Small chip? Touch it up. Don't excavate.
An illustration and a dramatization (the french fry, the dinosaur and the mantle are jokes). The real layers on a repaired door: clear coat over the colour coat, the primer and filler of earlier repairs, the factory paint, then bare steel.

It began, as these things do, with "just a small chip." We would simply... feather it out. Layer one. The clear coat. Shiny. Optimistic. Midnight Blue. The colour on the invoice. Close-Enough Blue. A previous repair. It did not match. The Great Bondo Deposit. Contains one fossilised french fry. Factory paint. The original. Nobody remembers it. Bare steel. Normal people stop here. A dinosaur. Not covered by insurance. The Earth's mantle. We may have sanded too far. So... how much? Exit through the gift shop. Small chip? Touch it up. Don't excavate.
