Where to find the paint code on a BMW

Newer BMWs: on the label in the driver's door jamb (the B-pillar), beside the VIN. Older BMWs: under the hood, on or near a strut tower.

The code is three characters, digits or a letter and two digits, often under a German color name: 475 Black Sapphire Metallic, 300 Alpine White III, A96 Mineral White Metallic. Ignore anything after a slash.

490 is BMW Individual's special-order code, not one color: send us a painted part and we match it.

The VIN does not contain the paint code, but a BMW dealer can look the code up from it. Can't find the label? The finder lists every BMW color by year and model.

Why do BMW tri-coat colors come as two cans?

A tri-coat gets its depth from two separate components: a color basecoat, then a translucent pearl mid-coat sprayed over it. They can't be combined in one can, so we supply both, each mixed for your exact code, and you finish with clear. The BMW tri-coats in our list include A96 Mineral White Metallic Tricoat, C36 Dravite Grey Tricoat.

How much paint do I need?

A door ding or bumper corner: one 6.7 oz aerosol. One can covers about 2 to 3 sq ft in two coats, so a fender takes three or four cans, a door four to six and a hood six to nine. Spraying a larger area with a gun? Run it through our coverage calculator.
