Where to find the paint code on a Mercedes-Benz

Early 2000s and newer: on the sticker on the driver's door jamb (the B-pillar), with the VIN. About 1964 to the mid-2000s: on a plate on the radiator support.

The code is normally three digits: 197 Obsidian Black Metallic, 149 Polar White, 775 Iridium Silver Metallic. A four-digit form such as 9197 is the same color: drop the extra digit.

Why do Mercedes-Benz tri-coat colors come as two cans?

A tri-coat gets its depth from two separate components: a color basecoat, then a translucent pearl mid-coat sprayed over it. How much paint do I need?
